Have you ever wondered what Monotype would be like if Sword and Shield had the National Dex? What about with Mega Evolutions, Z-moves, Hidden Power, and Pursuit? Wonder no more because that’s precisely what this is! National Dex Monotype is a Monotype format with all features from past generations available. As it is a completely distinct metagame from regular Monotype, it will have a separate ban list while being a Monotype OM.

General Rules, Mechanics, and Usage Tips
  • All released and unbanned Pokemon, legacy moves, Mega Evolutions, and Z-moves are allowed. To complete the mechanics change, Gen 7 legal old items are being brought up (e.g: Arceus plates, Mega Stones, Z-Crystals, Soul Dew, among others).
  • New Pokemon introduced in Gen 8 can't learn moves removed in Sword and Shield since they aren't in their natural movesets. That includes formerly universal TMs like Hidden Power. In the same vein, no new moves added in Gen 8 can be used for Z-moves.
  • Battle mechanics are updated to match Gen 8's. That means Rapid Spin is now 50 base power and rises Speed by one stage, for example.
  • Just like Generation 7 Monotype, to use a Mega Evolution, it must share a type both pre and post-Mega Evolution. This means the newly added Mega Galarian Slowbro is only allowed on Psychic teams, as it copies regular Mega Slowbro's stats and typing.
  • As the metagame is essentially a sequel to SM Monotype with the new Gen 8 features and additions, a good way to start is by tweaking existing SM Monotype teams considering all the new features/threats. However, some types were changed to a different degree than others!
Thread Rules & Uses
  • This thread will serve as a place to house all the resources listed below: Viability Rankings, Sample Teams, Speed Tiers, Good Cores, and Viable sets. On top of this, the thread will act as a discussion thread as well.
  • Due to this mega-thread's nature, we would like you to clearly label your post, whether it is adding to a specific resource or just discussion about the metagame. This will allow us and others to understand your post better.
  • Please do not use this thread to ask anything that would be asked in a Simple Questions & Simple Answers thread. Instead, please ask them in our discord channel dedicated to exactly that.
  • General Smogon & National Dex forum rules apply to this thread; please follow them.

Welcome to the National Dex Monotype Viability Rankings! In Monotype, Pokemon are ranked based upon how viable they are relative to the other Pokemon you have available on a particular type. The Pokemon in A rank are more viable than those in B rank, but that does not mean B rank Pokemon aren't useful or have a valuable niche. Anything that is ranked must be usable and have some value that prevents it from being outclassed. Most Pokemon are placed into one of five different rankings: S, A, B, C, and D. Some Pokemon aren’t listed either because they are either completely outclassed or haven't been ranked yet. Pokemon are ranked separately for each type. Pokemon are ranked separately for each type. For example, Water teams (stall specifically) love having access to Lanturn's Volt Absorb to provide an extra Electric immunity, but Electric teams have limited interest in Lanturn because there are no needs/superior options for its niche; therefore Lanturn would be ranked separately for each type.

General / Write up Rules
  • Flaming will not be tolerated. Please respectfully debate each other's nominations.
  • Post smartly, don't just be like, "I like Dubwool, so it should be in S Tier!"
  • Include the Pokemon you're rating, the type, and what rank you want it to be.
  • Provide an explanation as to why you put it in that rank and how it fares in Monotype. (Why should it be ranked lower or higher?)
  • Please only nominate rank changes for Pokemon that you have direct experience using. Do not use theory or on-paper ideas.
Viability Ranking Council: These people will have the final say if a decision by the community cannot be reached or a Pokemon is completely misplaced. If you have any questions or need help, please PM / VM these people.
How to rank
  • Include the Pokemon you're rating, the type, and what rank you want it to be.
  • Explain as to why you put it in that rank and how it fares in Monotype. (Why should it be ranked lower or higher?)

What is a core?
Effective cores are essential in competitive Pokemon, and any good player uses them, intentionally or not. Defensive cores rely on covering a lot of attacking types and common threats within the core while also offering team support so that the core is useful even when walled. On the other hand, offensive cores still have the common attacking types covered between its members, but offensive synergy is most important. Be it one member of the core attracting Pokemon that another member can easily switch into and force out, one member luring and weakening the checks and counters of another, or one member being able to beat the Pokemon that the other can't, those are the characteristics that are wanted from a good offensive core. Finally, there are mixed or balanced cores and support and pivoting cores, which blend into offensive and defensive cores. Support or pivoting elements in cores aim to either provide easier switch-in and set up chances to offensive Pokemon, or help to wall and stall out the opponent in the case of defensive cores. -Alexwolf

The Monotype metagame presents a unique challenge for building viable cores because each Pokemon on the team must share a common type, which leads to shared weaknesses and STAB attacks.

Having a solid core is the starting point for building a top-notch team. The purpose of this thread is to discuss Monotype cores and, more importantly, provide a database of good cores for players to begin building their teams around.

As we have begun a new generation with Sun and Moon, this thread will be starting completely from scratch, so involvement is not only highly encouraged but utterly necessary. If you have an awesome core, we still want to see it!

Welcome to the National Dex Monotype Speed Tiers Project! National Dex Monotype utilizes a wide spectrum of Pokemon from all of the standard tiers which creates a diverse range of Speed stats. There is a strong prominence of Choice Scarf users and unique sets, which aren't captured in the standard tiers, and teambuilding restrictions have developed the need to ensure you outspeed certain threats that excel against your type. The aim of this project is to compile all of that information into a comprehensive set of speed tiers for the National Dex Monotype metagame.

Reasons to Ban Mega Medicham (Going to do other mons)
First I want to say I have a burning hate for this Pokémon. It looks like a scraggy with some of his clothes out.
But the power from this is absolutely immense, able to take out several Pokémon with pure power. Not to mention psychic terrain turning zen headbutts into brutal wall breaking potential.
Damage Calcs: Just some examples.
252 Atk Pure Power Medicham-Mega High Jump Kick vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Corviknight: 339-400 (84.7 - 100%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO*
252 Atk Pure Power Medicham-Mega High Jump Kick vs. 252 HP / 248+ Def Hippowdon: 228-268 (54.2 - 63.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Pure Power Medicham-Mega High Jump Kick vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Gastrodon: 324-382 (76 - 89.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO *
252 Atk Pure Power Medicham-Mega Ice Punch vs. 244 HP / 0 Def Gliscor: 452-532 (128.4 - 151.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Pure Power Medicham-Mega High Jump Kick vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Alakazam: 331-390 (131.8 - 155.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO*
*Fake Out
Just some examples of this.

So let me get this straight. Mega Swampert on Ground is D ranked, despite having no real viability (I can speak for it lol), yet Mega Camerupt is unranked? I'd give it at least D, because it at least holds some niches (i.e. powerful fire coverage, one of only a few viable special wallbreakers, can absorb Wil-O burns). Just a far away observer lol.

Camerupt doesn't do anything that Nidoking or Landorus do as a Sheer Force abuser, with them handling Fairy, Steel, etc., just as well as Mega Camerupt while also not taking up the mega slot. The only reason Mega Swampert is ranked is due to the fact it got access to Flip Turn this gen, carving it enough of a niche to be ranked.

Mega Swampert literally has no reason to be ranked, that is barely a niche. Non-mega slot mons can use uturn/flip turn like *normal* Swampert, Lando-T, etc. I'm just saying the fact that it's ranked over Megarupt is a bit of a cruel comparison. That's the only point I'm making

maroon edit: not gonna clog up the thread with this nonsense any further. if you want to discuss it join the discord or pm me.

hey im here to make a maybe semi insightful post compared to whatever is going on up there^

Urshifu-Rapid-Strike @ Choice Band
Ability: Unseen Fist
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Surging Strikes
- Close Combat
- U-turn
- Aqua Jet

Tapu Fini @ Leftovers
Ability: Misty Surge
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Taunt / Iron Defense
- Scald / Stored Power
- Draining Kiss
This is a core that I think fits great on both rain and non rain offense water teams. Urshifu-R is a pretty potent breaker that can check SubTox Aegislash and Defensive Celesteela since they can't protect on your attacks. Also, you have a 50% chance to OHKO Melmetal which is pretty nice. Tapu Fini eases the dragon matchup, and finally gets some form of recovery in Draining Kiss, although it gets to be more reliable after a Calm Mind or 2. While Scald is cool to burn non grounded targets, if you opt to run ID + Stored Power alongside CM, after 1 of each, you have a favorable chance to 2HKO Mega Venusaur and Defensive Toxapex with Stored Power. On a rain offense, some teammates to work with these 2 would be Pelipper (obviously), Mega Swampert and Greninja. On a non rain offense or balance water build, Slowking, SpDef Swampert and Greninja again make some good teammates. The key is getting these in safely using your pivots, and they are dangerous.

Here are the calc's that go along with the description above:
252 Atk Choice Band Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Celesteela: 207-244 (52 - 61.3%) -- 96.1% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Choice Band Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Surging Strikes (3 hits) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Celesteela on a critical hit: 198-234 (49.7 - 58.7%) -- approx. 66.8% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Choice Band Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Close Combat vs. 244 HP / 0 Def Melmetal: 432-510 (91.5 - 108%) -- 50% chance to OHKO
+1 0 SpA Tapu Fini Stored Power (100 BP) vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Venusaur-Mega: 178-210 (49 - 57.8%) -- 96.1% chance to 2HKO
+1 0 SpA Tapu Fini Stored Power (100 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Toxapex: 152-180 (50 - 59.2%) -- 74.6% chance to 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery

That's all I got for now. If discussion continues to be lackluster, I will come back and show some other cool stuff I have been experimenting with or want to experiment with, but I would really like to see what everyone else has been testing. See y'all later!

It'll be my first time doing a core, so lets make sure I don't miss anything super important:

Moltres, Torkoal, and Heatran make for a Sturdy backbone for Fire teams, as the typing's each of them respectively share can quell many offensive threats that fire otherwise need to outspeed or outpunch to get over. Moltres & Heatran Protect scout & switch based on the threat's scouted move. Threats include, but do not limit to: Choiced Terrakion, Choiced Heracross, Choiced Nihilego, Urshifu-Rapid Strike (In Sun), Volcanion, Tapu lele, Mega Medicham, , Darmanitan-G, and Choiced Kyurem. Heavy Duty Boots enables Moltres to become one of Fire's Best Defoggers, And Access to Morning Sun Allows it to Heal Much more in the sun & forgo landing & giving up it's ground immunity, though Roost can be run on teams that have trouble sustaining late-game. Torkoal is a Must on Fire, being the premier Drought & Rocks Setter & can be shockingly bulky, while it does lack any true sustainability outside of Rest. Burning jealousy is ran over Flamethrower and Lava Plume to catch Opposing set up mons (Since it autoburns if The Opponent's stat's increase) that can cause brutal trouble for fire, such as Shell Smash Cloyster, Azumarill, Bulk up Urshifu, Dragonite, Scale Shot Garchomp, and Dragon Dance ttar. l. The Drought Allows Moltres & Heatran easier times tanking hard hitting water moves (Enabling Moltres to 1v1 Urshifu-RS, as Rapid Strike will only have 4 Surging Strikes & each one has a higher chance to burn) And of course, boosting the Offensive Pokémon of the team, such as a Cinderace or a Victini. Heatran is the premire stall trapper for Fire, Being able to trap Bulky Defensive Mons that may grind fire's offenses to a halt, including Pex, Slowking-Galar, and Slowbro. Protect is well needed to scout Choiced Moves, But Taunt + Toxic Can completely shut down Recovery/Teleport users such as Chansey, Mantine the Aforementioned Slowbro, and Clefable (If needed).

Just about any Viable fire Pokémon can work with this trio, but I'll go Over some higher-favored examples:

Victini can provide devastating v-creates or blue flares under sun, pressure water/flying mons with bolt strike, and provide u-turns to safely allow any of the defensive backbone when needed. It can also run a Special Z-Celebrate Set with Focus Blast or Energy Ball depending on the other offensive Pokémon.

Infernape is a Excellent Scarfer for Fire; it's above average speed allows it to catch Threats such as Mega Diance and Darm-G, as well as providing another u-turn pivot into whatever is needed at the moment.

Cinderace is One of the best Pokémon Fire has; It can Pivot, Swap hazards, offensively threaten, and clean up some unfavorablemons with it's movepool. with these mons, Cinderace's best set would probably by a Life Orb/Z-move set that allows it to threaten out any of the things that may pressure the Defensive Backbone without having to worry about hazards due to Moltres and Torkoal. Z-Bulk up or Electro Ball + Z-Sucker punch are some examples.

Mega Medicham is now banned from National Dex Monotype!
:sm/medicham-mega:

Mega Medicham is an extremely powerful wallbreaker, able to OHKO and 2HKO any Pokemon that did not resist its STAB attacks. This means that most Monotype metagame teams can not check it defensively. Alongside its amazing STAB attacks, and access to Dual Priority in Fake Out and Bullet Punch, it has access to a plethora of coverage such as the Ice Punch, Thunder Punch, and Fire Punch, which allows it to target different Pokemon it would normally 2HKO and OHKO them such as Gliscor and Mantine, and Fire Punch specifically allowed Mega Medicham to target counters to it such as Aegislash. Overall, STAB, coverage, and Speed Mega Medicham were too much for the tier.

In other news, Splash has stepped down from the council; thanks for helping out. In Splash's place, Isza will be joining us on the council!

Guess my message got through lol, but lets see some mons that might need some lookign into.

Urshifu - R

This thing is a monster under rain, which is the defining playstyle. Being able to pressure teams under rain basically giving it a choice band boost. For example I like running a choice scarf set utilizing its already good speed tier to run adamant to mow unprepared teams, and it speed creeps max 150 by one point at 439, and pairing with pelliper because of its hurricane allowing it to pressure grass types, for example, not even mentioning the ability to negate protect crushing normal ways to check rain like ferrothorn and celesteela, urshifu should at least be looked at.
252+ Atk Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 80 Def Ferrothorn: 320-378 (90.9 - 107.3%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO
252+ Atk Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Close Combat vs. 188 HP / 4 Def Celesteela: 210-247 (54.9 - 64.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Surging Strikes (3 hits) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Aegislash-Shield on a critical hit: 156-189 (48.1 - 58.3%) -- approx. 52% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Surging Strikes (3 hits) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Aerodactyl-Mega on a critical hit: 456-546 (151.4 - 181.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Surging Strikes (3 hits) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Galvantula on a critical hit: 309-369 (109.9 - 131.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Surging Strikes (3 hits) vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Diancie-Mega on a critical hit: 414-492 (171.7 - 204.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
0 SpA Pelipper Hurricane vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Tapu Bulu: 236-282 (83.9 - 100.3%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO
0 SpA Pelipper Hurricane vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Venusaur-Mega: 194-230 (53.4 - 63.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Steel Immunity Core
Lets give some backstory, back in gen 7 this core was not allowed at all alongside king shield being great move to spam and its way to warp everything around it, Aegislash was part of the gen 7 mono banlist. With gen 8 brought a extreme nerf to Aegislash with its king shield dropping a stage instead of 2, and its nerfed stats, Aegislash was allowed in monotype, here especiallly without the presence of hetran (and cellestela), The immunity core alongside steel's natural resistances makes staring these 3 mons is like throwing a shot at a rigged hoop, while you can score, you had to know what the opponent was doing in order to stop it, for example fire teams have to contend with hetran, cinderace has to have excelent predictions in order to take it out because aegislash easily can switch in and it's going to be taking 50 percent from stealth rock, alongside exadrill being able to preasure rock types, steel can sometimes overpower them, then fighting might seem good with urshifu utterly bellywomping aegislash, unless if it's running band, which can be played around by switching to ferrothorn and giving it rocky helmet chip. And ground types with the cellathorn core can easily destroy it besides landorus having to run gravity. But with the monotype philosophy not wanting to repeat what happened with skaymin-sky, and kyurem white with its type bans and complex bans, i dunno it's up to the council to decide, banning one of them, or a complex ban that a ghost/fire/flying pokemon aren't all able to be used on the same team.

Other good mons but not ban worthy
Cinderace:
While extremely good for fire teams, and ability to change types on the physical front, cinderace is excellent, but the lack of another type doesn't allow it to fully flesh its potential.
Galarian-Darmanitan: Not good. Ok its not it, it's the fact that ice is extremely useless, and it doesn't have a second stab to warrant a ban.
Landorus-I: Just extremly good on ground, love using this mon allows me to check grass, not overbearing, but incredibly good.
Urshifu-S: It has a amazing offensive typing, while not overbearing due to a quadruble fiary weakness, and it not being to powerful in this limited format.
Regieleki: Sucks against ground types and a extreme lack of coverage, all I got to say.
Swampertite: Just a great rain mon, especially with flip turn to piviot and maintain momentum.
Toxapex: This is painful, but it's just good, not too overbearing, but give me 5 muinites i'll make a not so good post why this is by far my worst nemisis consisting of the 5 words of Hate, Swearing, Bad, Annoying, and most importantly Gigavolt Havoc.
